Monday, January 24th the Heat (1-1) had a rematch with the Andover Jets. In a previous tournament game these two teams met with the Jets winning by nine points. In the rematch it was a much different story.
As in previous games both teams played very even to start the game. About half way through the first half the Heat made three baskets three possessions in a row with good execution. The Heat maintained their lead with defense, rebounds, and hard work. They never gave up on a play. At the half, the Heat led 14-8.
It was a good thing the Heat had the six point advantage. In the second half both teams struggled getting the ball to go in the basket. Each team scored only 4 points in the second half making the final score: 18-12.
We were proud of the boys tonight. Anytime you can come away with a victory it is a good night! We noticed improvement on squaring up to the basket, finding the open man under the basket and on ball defense. Great game Heat!
Grant Dunham was unable to play in this game because of strep throat. We know that we can count on him to play hard and get lots of rebounds. We challenged each player to step up and fill the void. The boys responded well. Grant D., we missed you tonight!

League Play Opens Against The Legends

Saturday, January 15th the Heat opened league play against the Legends. The boys battled hard. The game started out back and forth with each team getting a couple of buckets. Then one guard for the Legend started shooting "lights out". By half time the Heat were down by just a few points. To start the second half, again the teams were pretty even. Then the Legends went on up by ten. At one point the score board said 12-25. After a time out the Heat began to battle harder. A couple of baskets here and some free-throws there...under a minute left the Heat came within three points.

Even though the scoreboard read 22-27 and the Heat lost, the coaches felt as if it were a victory for the team. The boys chose the high road and kept fighting when it could have been just as easy to give up. This is a tough lesson to learn but one that will make us a better basketball team!

Pre-Season vs. Lil Avengers
On January 8th each of the 2nd/3rd grade teams played one pre-season game. The purpose of the game was to see which pool each team should play in for league play. There will be Pool A, Pool B, and Pool C.
We played the Lil Avengers and won 14-4. The coaches were proud of the effort the boys gave the entire game. They were on the floor for loose balls and fighting for offensive rebounds. Our thought of the game was: "There is no secret to success. Hard work equals success." Even though our shots were not falling we still came away with a win because of hard work. Good win boys!!
